Conferral of the Legendary Caribbean Legal Practitioners Award

On the 25th June, 2023 Dr Claude Denbow SC received a letter from the Caribbean Court of Justice Academy for Law stating as follows:

“The CCJ Academy for Law is the educational arm of the Caribbean Court and every two years, the Academy honors a specific group of Eminent Caribbean Jurists who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the development of Caribbean law and practice.

I am exceedingly delighted to inform you of your selection as a “Legendary Caribbean Legal Practitioner” for this biennial celebratory award. Your lifetime of outstanding work and achievements has not gone unnoticed, and it is with great delight and honor that we propose to recognize, memorialize, and commemorate your contribution to the practice of law. We are truly ecstatic to have you as a member of this year’s honorees and look forward to honoring your accomplishments.”

On 25th September, 2023, the CCJ issued the following media release:

Eminent Caribbean Jurists: Legendary Caribbean Legal Practitioners

The CCJ Academy for Law proudly announces the selection of forty- eight (48) exceptional Caribbean Lawyers for recognition as Legendary Caribbean Legal Practitioners. Among the awardees are giants of the legal profession representing historical, transitional, and contemporary epochs of law and development in the region.

The legal legends were selected by the CCJ Academy appointed Regional Selection and Advisory Committee which first met on 27 September 2022. During its ten meetings in all, the Committee elicited nominations from Bar Associations, Judiciaries, Journalists, The Council for Legal Education and its Law Schools, other Law Schools in the Region, Professional Associations, Former Eminent Caribbean Jurists. One hundred and fifteen (115) nominations were received from which 48 were selected having regard to regional and temporal distribution.

Another important function of the Committee was to identify suitable essayists who would compile a brief profile of each honoree. This has been done and the essays have been compiled and submitted.

The full list of the selected Awardees and their Essayists is attached to this Release.

The Academy anticipates that the publication memorializing the contribution of these outstanding legal practitioners to the development of law in the region will be available from December 2023 and will be officially launched in January 2024. The Academy hopes that the life and work of these legal legends will be a source of inspiration for the younger generation of legal practitioners.

In an era where large law firms are the norm, we take exception to that trend.

Our small size is our strength. We operate in specialist niche areas unhampered by bureaucratic delay and the multiplicity of matters in a general practice.
